Catriona’s Nature based methods are healing and transformational
While most people understand the vital role nature plays in ecological and biological processes, few of us are aware that we can actually be healed emotionally, socially, creatively and spiritually, just by being in and near wild life and nature. Modern studies now confirm the positive impact of nature on healing, spiritual renewal, self-actualization, skills development and self esteem.
It has been scientifically proven that:
- Exposure to natural scenes reduces stress (Ulrich et al, 1991) and is likely to have long-term physiological health benefits (Parsons, 1991).
- Children with Attention Deficit Disorder function better than usual after activities in outdoor settings (Faber Taylor et al, 2001)
- Views of nature from workplace windows buffer the negative effect of job stress; (Leather et al, 1998)
- Views of natural scenes from hospital windows aided patients' recovery from surgery (Ulrich, 1984)
The Connection: Nature & You
There is an undeniable connection between nature, healing and spirit. Unfortunately, today's society is geared towards moving away from exploring one's spirit and respecting nature. In Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature Deficit Disorder , author Richard Louv makes the studied observation that humankind’s lack of contact with nature is harmful to people and especially to children.
Louv coins the term "Nature Deficit Disorder" to describe this phenomena and defines it as a compilation of maladies including: an increase in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), childhood obesity, a general lack of creativity and curiosity, ignorance of local flora and fauna, loss of respect for nature, and a diminishing sense of community. "Yet at the very moment that the bond is breaking between the young and the natural world, a growing body of research links our mental, physical and spiritual health directly to our association with nature – in positive ways."
