Youth Quest

If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, let us allow them to love the Earth before we ask them to save it. Perhaps this is what Thoreau had in mind when he said, "the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core," and I think the same is true of human beings.
-David Sobel, Beyond Eco-phobia

Learning about the Earth as if It Were Our Home
Our ancestors provided their children with education about their environment on a daily basis. Children learned how to find food and how to build shelter, and in doing so, they came to know and understand everything that walks, crawls, or grows. As the planet becomes more and more industrialized and computerized, we lead lives less and less connected to the land. Parents no longer spend time with their children teaching them about nature and there is little being offered to children today to make up for a lack of awareness about and experience in nature.

Youth Quest addresses the growing disconnect between people and nature as well as the lack of access that some people have to parks and open space.

Thus, our goals are two-fold: offer enrichment to youth that will prepare them for a more fulfilling adulthood; and, instill a stronger land conservation ethic and love for the outdoors.

We provide youth with an opportunity to explore their unique skills and talents, in the setting of beautiful and inspiring places in nature. We also provide scholarships to youth.

Our scholarship process itself is a "coaching" tool to assist youth in identifying their unique talents and interests and encouraging them to strengthen and pursue those interests.

By providing experiences in the outdoors - to youth that might not otherwise have these experiences - we are growing a generation that will have a better understanding of nature, and a greater appreciation for wild places and the animals and plants that reside there.
